Mobile Communications Trailer

In 2016 Club members Peg and Chris Sorensen (recent certified members of the Club’s ARES team) participated in a Statewide field exercise with the rest of the unit, which coincided with high winds and heavy rains. The exercise required setting up a field communications post with tents and portable radios, power and antenna systems. At the next Club Board meeting Peg and Chris approached the Club and the Board with a proposition to provide a custom-built trailer for the Club and in support the ARES mission.

With support from Peg’s brother’s estate (Tom Downs N7IPD-SK) and a large investment from the Sorensen’s, a trailer was ordered. Radio equipment was donated and several Florence area support agencies (listed on main webpage) provided grants and equipment.

Several members of the club assisted with planning and building the trailer pictured. The trailer is self-contained with its own generator, solar and battery system. The trailer is designed to be connected to shore power when available.

The trailer is capable of communicating on all amateur radio frequencies and other radio systems as authorized. Development is ongoing for internet and a self-contained intranet system for the Florence area.

The trailer is available for viewing at several Florence events and at the yearly amateur radio field day.
